Some Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

There are many reasons why a motorcycle accident might occur, but the most common reasons have to do with bad driving skills. Here we go over some of the most common reasons these sorts of auto accidents occur and what you can do to protect yourself.

Not Seeing the Motorcycle

In too many cases, a driver doesn’t see the motorcycle until after the collision has already occurred. There are a lot of possible reasons.

The driver of a car is making a left turn or changing lanes.

A driver is distracted by activities such as talking on a cell phone, texting, putting on makeup, or trying to pick up something that fell on the floor.

Sometimes drivers don’t keep enough distance between themselves and motorcycles.

The motorcycle is in a blind spot.

The motorcycle is weaving through traffic and the driver does something unexpected, like changing lanes.

Other Reasons for Accidents

Other possible reasons for motorcycle accidents include the following.

Motorcycle drivers can be unskilled or may be driving under hazardous road conditions. In general, a motorcycle driver is especially at risk for being in an accident during the first six months of driving a motorcycle.

Sometimes motorcycle drivers don’t realize that the driver of a car doesn’t see them.

Some drivers are hostile toward motorcycle drivers and are too aggressive when driving around them.

When traffic slows down, people may try to get moving again by passing other traffic, but they might not be thinking about possible safety hazards. Passing on the shoulder isn’t always safe.

If a tire fails on the road because of something such as running over glass or a nail, or if a driver neglects preventive maintenance for a car or motorcycle, then there is a good chance that when the tire, car or motorcycle malfunctions, it will cause an accident.

If anyone has been drinking or doing drugs, an accident becomes more likely.

Protecting Yourself

If you choose to ride a motorcycle, you should strongly consider doing the following.

Wear protective clothing. Leathers, good shoes, gloves, and a helmet are not as much protection as air bags and the protective frame of a car, but they are better than nothing.

Get some good training and drive carefully.

Don’t assume that the drivers around you can see you. Act accordingly and do your best to stay out of their way.
