Michelle Merkel joined Browning Law Firm as their Litigation Paralegal in 2026. A Northwest Indiana native, Michelle relocated to the Florida Panhandle in 2014 with her husband and three children. She began her legal career in 1997, working at a general practice firm before joining a firm in Chicago in 1999, where she gained extensive experience in insurance defense litigation involving medical malpractice, nursing home abuse and neglect, premises liability, dram shop liability, and product liability matters in various jurisdictions. When Michelle relocated to the Panhandle in 2014, her role reversed when she began working for a personal injury firm, handling auto accidents, slip and falls, dog bites, and product liability cases.
For over 29 years, Michelle has dedicated her career to navigating the complexities of the legal system, defending insurance companies in Chicago and supporting clients in Florida through some of their most challenging times as they make claims against the same insurance companies she once helped defend. Specializing in civil litigation, her role as the Litigation Paralegal at Browning Law Firm involves managing case files through resolution, including drafting pleadings and trial preparation in various jurisdictions throughout Florida.
Throughout her career, Michelle has built a reputation for meticulous attention to detail, efficiency, and deep dedication to her clients. She prides herself on guiding clients through the overwhelming legal process, including discovery and settlement, often translating confusing “legalese” with clarity and compassion and serving as a reliable point of contact for case updates.
In her free time, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband and three adult children on family excursions, deepening her faith by participating in church activities, and snuggling up with her “fur babies” to watch a good crime show or disaster movie.
